AMPC on two prize winning teams at RIBA awards

At the RIBA awards dinner on Friday night, both AMPC projects which opened on 2005 received RIBA awards, namely the Yehudi Menuhin School in Cobham and the Egg Children’s Theatre in Bath, the former in the arts and leisure category and the latter for conservation of a building.

The RIBA awards emphasise the importance of the client and team in achieving successful buildings. The architects for the Yehudi Menuhin School are Burrell, Foley Fischer and for the Egg Children’s Theatre are Haworth Tompkins. Anne Minors Performance Consultants were appointed by the clients on both projects, responsible for the room form and seating, sightlines and technical specification of two very different spaces.

The RIBA judges described the Egg Bath as "this delightful small-scale children’s theatre – as a red egg ... inserted into the shell of a former parish hall" and the Yehudi Menuhin School as "delivered on an exceptionally tight budget but is none the poorer for that ... Inside the hall is magic in maple",

Both buildings cost less than £2.8M and provide educational facilities for the client and the local community through their outreach programmes.

At the recent Theatre Engineering and Architecture conference, Anne Minors emphasised the important role of buildings for young people in sowing the seeds of participation in the arts in the next generation and thus feeding the big institutional buildings in cities with both performers and audiences of the future.
