The Yehudi Menuhin School Stoke D'Abernon, United Kingdom

Raising standards to new highs

This unique international boarding school attracts prodigiously talented music students. With only a limited budget, the client was in need of a top-quality concert hall of 300 seats for internal use.
It was to be geared towards chamber music ensemble, recitals and guitar playing, to serve a small number of the public performances and act as a lasting memorial to Yehudi Menuhin, the founder of the school.

The Yehudi Menuhin School Conception

AMPC collaborated with Burrell Foley Fischer Architects to produce a simple and economical form of auditorium.

A continuous ring of balcony and audience faces surround the stage at first floor level and at ground floor level the low stage riser is supported by the stalls designed with a shallow rake.

The result has been a beautiful Concert Hall with an acoustic that receives universal praise from all who experience it. The seat layout provides the connection between performer and audience that is so important in today’s performance practice.

Activities, shows & life of the project

The new build received multiple awards and additional income streams for the school from recording and outside hires.

The success of the hall has resulted in the Council granting additional numbers of performances per year and the BBC has installed live streaming equipment and remote cameras for broadcasting.
