Revealing its natural beauty
Bishopsgate Institute London, United Kingdom
This Grade II* listed building from 1895 required a renewal project to transform a tired adult education institute into a contemporary centre for ideas, debate and knowledge whilst restoring the historic 19th century features of the building.
The client’s vision for the refurbishment was to modernise and extend the remit of the Great Hall from a choral rehearsal space to an attractive venue for conferences and celebrations.

The Trustees are delighted with what has been achieved

Bishopsgate Institute Gestation
AMPC worked in collaboration with Sheppard Architects: the removal of the suspended ceiling revealed the original roof shape and roof lights changing the dynamic of the space.
AMPC designed and specified related performance lighting to coordinate sensitively with house lighting chandeliers that blend with the historic interiors, emphasizing the refurbished contemporary house lighting.
We contributed to the design of the acoustic canopy with integrated platform lighting. In addition to flexible seating layouts AMPC design for the production lighting scheme enables any part of the Great Hall to be the stage.

Bishopsgate Institute Birth
AMPC helped the client to expand their use of the Great Hall to accommodate dance performances, recitals and examinations in addition to their past repertoire. It has furnished the client with greater hiring options.
The renewed centre accommodates a diverse range of activities for the City of London for one of its most dynamic communities.

Activities, shows & life of the project
Bishopsgate Institute is a local hub for the community offering a meeting place; social gathering space; debating and lecture space as well as a music rehearsal room. The improvements completed in 2011 have fulfilled the client’s ambition of establishing the venue as a vibrant cultural centre.
